Assam

The central state in the North-East region of India, Assam is regarded as the gateway to the Seven Sisters of North-East India. A land of diverse geographical landscapes, from the Brahmaputra Valley to the Tea Estate in Dibrugarh and Jorhat, from the fertile plains of Barak Valley to the hills of Karbi  Anglong  and Diphu.  The one horned rhinos of Kaziranga National Park , the riverine  island of Majuli (world heritage site ), elephant safari at Manas National Park and Pobitora  wildlife sanctuary, the historical monuments of Ahom dynasty like Rang Ghar,  Kareng  Ghar,  Talatal Ghar , Sivadol,  Joysagar  Tank at Sivasagar, the massive tea plantation in and around Jorhat, the rare species of birds in Jatinga  (famous for mysterious bird suicides), Assam  is a land of diverse ethnic and cultural background.

GUWAHATI  : It is the entry to the seven states of North-East India . It  is the commercial hub of the state and is a fast growing  cosmopolitan city with shopping malls and urban landscapes.  Places to visit in Guwahati  are :

Kamakhya  Temple : One of the most important pilgrimage destination for hindu and specially tantric worshipers, Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati attracts devotees and sadhus from the world over especially during Ambubachi Mela during the monsoon season.

Kaziranga National Park : This UNESCO world heritage site is the last remaining habitat of the great Indian one horned rhinoceros. The park is a large breeding ground of elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer. The elephant safari at Kaziranga is a must for tourist to view the massive expanse of land.

Majuli : The world’s  largest river island on the Brahmaputra river, Majuli is accessible by ferries from Jorhat city. It is a bird lover’s paradise specially during winter. The island holds important Vaishnavite Satras which are of historic importance.

Sivasagar : It was the seat of the Ahom kingdom and is home to many historical and archaeological movements like Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Sivadol, Joy Dol, Sivasagar Tank, Joysagar Tank etc.

Manas National Park / Manas Wildlife Sanctuary : Manas National Park is one of the best-kept national parks in India. A UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, it is a Tiger Reserve, an Elephant Reserve and a Biosphere reserve in Assam. Home to India’s second-largest tiger population, Manas offers a spectacular natural landscape with a range of forested hills, tropical evergreen forests and large grasslands where wild water buffaloes, rhinos and tigers are easily spotted. Hugely popular among tourists, Manas is a shelter for endangered wildlife species like Assam roofed turtle, golden langur, pygmy hog and hispid hare. October to April is the best time to plan your trip to Manas to get enchanted by the spectacular natural and wildlife visuals on display.

Nameri National Park : Located in the foothills of eastern Himalayas, Nameri National Park is a hot-bed for over 600 species of rare plants. About 35 kms from Tezpur, Nameri provides ideal habitat for tiger, leopard, sambar, Indian wild bison , sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, Indian giant squirrel and capped langur. With over 300 species of rare and endangered birds like great pied hornbill, ibisbill, babblers, plovers, white-winged-wood-duck etc, Nameri has over the years become India’s most-loved bird sanctuary. River rafting on the Jia Bhoreli/Kameng  river, jungle trek in the forested hills and spending nights in tents in the Nameri Eco Park is gaining immense popularity among nature lovers.

Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary : One hour drive from Guwahati with roads passing by the mighty Brahmaputra River, one reaches Pobitora wildlife Sanctuary. One of the best sanctuary in Assam to view the one-horned rhinoceros, Pobitora is an extremely important Wildlife Sanctuary in North-East India. Leopards , wild boar, barking deer and wild buffaloes can be easily spotted here on jeep and elephant safaris. During the winter months over 2000 migratory birds make Pobitora their home attracting keen bird-watchers from India and abroad. Haduk Hanging Bridge and Garanga Beel (Pond) are must watch places when one visits Pobitora. Elephant rides and jeep safaris here are major activities.
